a win-win for both preservationists and rental housing advocates, the renovation and preservation of Queen Anne Exchange creates 25 loft-style apartments

Queen Anne Exchange

Built in 1921 as a telephone switchboard operation facility, this Seattle Landmark building has been converted into 25 loft-style rental apartments. BuildingWork worked with the Faul Company to both preserve the unique historic character of this vacant, un-maintained warehouse and transform it into much-needed rental housing; a win-win for both preservationists and rental housing advocates.

The project scope included a complete seismic retrofit, restoration of the historic brick and terra cotta façade, a new top floor addition, a new parking garage in the basement, 25 multi-family residential units, a common roof terrace, all new mechanical and electrical systems, full life-safety and accessibility upgrades. The building’s beautiful façade, concrete floor structure, tall floor-to-floor heights, and generous vertically proportioned windows were particularly well-suited to its transformation to residential use.

Both Seattle and the Queen Anne neighborhood benefit from the careful preservation of this Landmark building and by the creation of new multi-family residential units.
